The gaming industry is growing more quickly than ever before. This growth creates a large opportunity for cybercriminals to launch attacks. However, the fact is that fraudsters prefer to infect certain games more than others.

Knowing which games are most targeted by fraudsters can help users stay safe when playing those games or using mods, skins, etc.

Atlas VPN has released data that shows which PC and mobile games are most likely to contain malware that can steal your sensitive data, like login credentials and access to bank accounts.

According to the figures, Minecraft is the most favored game by hackers on desktop and mobile platforms. Based on the data provided by Kaspersky for analysis, it was found that total of 131,000 PC users downloaded malware-infected Minecraft games between July 1, 2021, to June 30, 2022. A few other games that appeared on the list of most infected PC games are Roblox (38,838), Need for Speed (32,314), Grand Theft Auto (31,752), and Call of Duty (30,401).

When it comes to mobile devices, almost 90% of malicious software targeting phones and tablets were delivered through the “pocket edition” of Minecraft.

Malware that steals card-details

The analysis also revealed that 76.87% of malware found in the video games mentioned above distributes the Trojan-PSW/RedLine Stealer malware family. The ReadLine Stealer’s primary steals data such as passwords, cookies, card details, autofill data, cryptocurrency wallet data, credentials for VPN services, and so on from browsers.

Generally, most issues happen when people download games from third-party websites. These websites often do not have tight security, which is a dream come true for cybercriminals. Even if a website has security badges or promises that its games are checked for viruses, it is not safe to trust those promises.

Most of such threats can be countered by using two-factor authentication on user accounts. They should also use different passwords for each account. It’s also important to only download games from legitimate retailers.
