A bunch of tech companies including Microsoft, Meta, EpicGames, and 33 others have come together to form the Metaverse Standards Forum which will foster the development of open standards for the metaverse. It will explore where the lack of interoperability is holding back Metaverse deployment and focus on pragmatic, action-based projects like implementation, prototyping, plugfests, hackathon and open-source tooling for accelerating the adoption of metaverse standards.

“The Forum will not create standards itself but will coordinate requirements and resources to foster the creation and evolution of standards within standards organizations working in relevant domains.” – cited the Forum’s official website.

With big tech companies coming together to create a unified standard, users can expect to have metaverse products widely usable across platforms and see some common tech innovations related to these products. The involvement of the big names will also be able to control the cost of developing some of the metaverse products individually. The activities of the Forum will be driven by the needs and interests of its members and will involve diverse technology domains.

Any organization can join the Metaverse Standards Forum free of cost.  Some of the current members of the Forum include Microsoft, Meta, Huawei, IKEA, HTC, Adobe, Blackshark.ai, Alibaba, Autodesk, Qualcomm, Open Geospatial Consortium, NVIDIA, Khronos, Sony Interactive Entertainment, W3C and many others.

Metaverse has been a hot topic for discussion lately. The metaverse is a combination of virtual reality, augmented reality and eye-tracking technologies that allow us to feel the digital presence within a virtual universe. It is a 3D environment where you can interact in your digital avatar instead of just watching videos or browsing. The metaverse allows people to live in their private worlds with customizable avatars just like how we do it in real life!
