Chief Information Officers (CIOs) understand the importance of prioritizing organizational strategies, management processes, and solutions to stay ahead in today’s rapidly changing business landscape. Organizations must consider how the current practices can be improved or adapted so they will produce the results.

Based on a study by NASCIO, here we shall explore priority strategies, management processes, and solutions that state CIOs are planning to adopt in the coming year.

Priority strategies, management processes, and solutions that CIOs plan for 2023

  1. Cybersecurity and risk management

As CIOs across the world strive to secure and protect their businesses in 2023, cybersecurity and risk management will be of utmost importance. A comprehensive assessment of potential risks must include considerations of governance, budget and resource requirements, security frameworks, data protection laws, training and awareness programs for staff, monitoring for insider threats, and prudent oversight of third-party relationships. A proactive approach to these issues is essential for any organization looking to stay ahead in the digital age.

2. Digital government and digital services

In an increasingly digital world, CIOs will be prioritizing the development of digital government and services to enable better public sector performance. They plan to build a framework for digital services that facilitate data-driven decision-making and enable governments to deliver optimal value through state portals, improving and digitizing citizens’ experiences. Accessibility is another crucial aspect of these efforts, as well as identity management and technology such as digital assistants. Privacy continues to be an essential element, and CIOs will focus on safeguarding citizens’ rights in a secure environment.

3. Readying workforce for the future

CIOs want to ensure the workforce is optimized for the future and is capable of delivering sustained value. To do this, they are reimagining how government employees are utilized to drive innovation, transformation, and improvement. They want to focus on enabling greater knowledge, skills, and experience among staff, while at the same time creating more well-defined roles in IT asset management, business relationship management, and service integration. They will be working to ensure that disparate operations across departments will come together to support state goals.

4. Legacy modernization

CIOs will increasingly focus on legacy modernization, a process that seeks to enhance, renovate, or replace old platforms and applications. Legacy modernization is essential for businesses looking to leverage the latest technologies while improving their processes.

5. Identity and access management

Identity and Access Management (IAM) will be a top priority for CIOs in 2023. IAM solutions are needed to respond to the challenges of providing access, authentication, and credentialing in the digital space. IAM will ensure data security and privacy while enabling the efficient delivery of digital services. CIOs are responsible for ensuring that secure access is granted to citizens, employees as well as other stakeholders who require digital services.

6. Cloud services

CIOs are prioritizing cloud services to deploy applications, streamline IT operations, and complete various tasks faster. As part of this, they must choose the most appropriate service and deployment models for the company’s needs, and select scalable and elastic services based on scalability requirements. They will also need to ensure that governance is in place to monitor quality and performance standards. It will also be necessary to secure data with security protocols and apply privacy policies to confirm the safe storage of data. With careful consideration given to these factors during their decision-making process, CIOs can implement an effective cloud strategy that can be beneficial for the organization.

7. Consolidation/Optimization of operations

CIOs are increasingly prioritizing the consolidation and optimization of enterprise operations, which involves centralizing services, resources, and infrastructure. This also includes consolidating data centers, standardizing communications and marketing for wider visibility, and instilling a mindset of ‘enterprise thinking’ that’s focused on long-term success. Streamlining these processes often leads to cost-saving measures, increased efficiency, and greater profits.

8. Data and information management

Data and information management is becoming increasingly important for CIOs. This includes everything from data governance, data architecture, and master data management to open data, sustained access to government data, and even the use of DataOps. It also includes strategies to make sure that the role of various types of data is enhanced. CIOs have to ensure successful knowledge management and effective data integration amongst their organizations. Additionally, they need to have carefully thought-out roles and responsibilities regarding all aspects of information management including storage, security, and other relevant areas.

9. Broadband and wireless connectivity

CIOs have made it a priority to focus on strengthening statewide connections, expanding rural broadband access, and deploying 5G technologies. By properly configuring their systems around these initiatives, CIOs will be able to provide reliable connections no matter where their employees or clients may be located. 5G-enabled opportunities and applications and organizations across various industries embracing digital transformation have led to CIOs taking interest in making sure that all users have access to fast internet speeds.

 10. Customer relationship management

CIOs will focus on customer relationship management to maximize customer satisfaction. They will be working to implement better internal customer service strategies, to build customer agency confidence and trust. Collaboration with the customers is key to ensuring that their needs are met in the most effective way possible; this includes agreeing on service level agreements that will facilitate demand planning. Through taking such actions, CIOs have the potential to create long-lasting relationships with customers who appreciate their efforts as much as they appreciate their services.
