Fujitsu recently published its Fujitsu Future Insights report titled “Global Digital Transformation Survey Report 2020”, highlighting the findings of a survey it conducted on 900 CxOs and decision makers and mid-sized companies that are spread across various industries in 9 countries(1). The fourth iteration of this survey studies the perceptions of business leaders about success factors for digital transformation (DX) and therefore the way it can give value to society. Fujitsu aims to make the world more sustainable by building trust in society via innovation. With the findings of this survey, Fujitsu will support companies accelerate their DX initiatives and provide even higher value to society.
Background
While industrial and technological development continues to help businesses and society, it has also generated vital social challenges, including environmental issues and cyberattacks. In recent months, the COVID-19 pandemic has threatened many lives and livelihoods, causing fundamental disruption to the worldwide economy. In light of this and other urgent environmental and social issues, people now increasingly expect organizations to contribute to solving social issues. In the context of the increasing awareness of social issues, the Fujitsu survey sought to learn how business leaders throughout the world now perceive the challenges of DX and giving value to society.
Summary of survey findings
- Perception of providing value to society
92% of respondents admit they need to give value to society to make their business more sustainable. The reasons cover growing product and brand value and appealing to younger generations, who are extremely conscious of social issues and whose opinions and activities are affecting policies and business. Also, about 80% of respondents agree that giving value to multiple stakeholders like customers, employees, partners, and local communities, including shareholders, is important. The results show that the pursuit of profit alone is not sufficient to attain sustainability. Companies must offer value to multiple stakeholders. - Challenges and success factors in providing value to society
35% of respondents say it was tough to develop practical projects that offer value to society through business. 34% said it was difficult to identify a clear return on investment. While respondents indicated that aligning their strategy with delivering social value and changing the mindsets of their employees are two main success factors for providing value to society. - DX and providing value to society
Almost 90% of respondents who have delivered results from DX initiatives told the efforts have enabled them to successfully give value to society, showing a positive contribution to both business and society as a whole. The social value that they have given through DX initiatives involves improved personal safety, increased well-being, contributing to smart and sustainable cities, and addressing climate change.
Furthermore, companies that deliver successful results from their DX initiatives are capable of providing more value to society.
