According to a recent Axios article, Tomorrow.io has unveiled its new weather satellite constellation, which has already started sending back images. These satellites aim to bridge the world’s data gaps, especially over oceans and developing countries.
Historically, only a few weather radar satellites, developed by space agencies like NASA and JAXA, have been launched. Tomorrow.io’s initiative stands out as it plans to deploy more than 30 private-sector satellite-based weather radars, a first of its kind. The company has plans to share radar data from R-1 and the upcoming R-2. The company has secured over $30 million in contracts from the Defense Department and received $10.3 million in U.S. Space Force funding for two weather satellites.
