Google lists 3 ways by which AI can make technology more accessible and useful

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to transform a number of industries and make our lives easier in several ways. In order to get AI right, it is important to involve many different people. This includes researchers, domain experts, developers, community members, businesses, governments, and citizens. Recently, Google announced three ways by which AI will bring transformation to its products.

The first is to leverage AI to make technology more accessible in many languages. The second is exploring how AI might help with creativity. And thirdly, using AI for social good including climate adaptation.

1,000 Languages Initiative powered by AI

Google announced the 1,000 Languages Initiative through which it will build an AI model that will support the 1,000 most spoken languages. This will bring greater inclusion to a lot of people in marginalized communities across the world.

“Language is fundamental to how people communicate and make sense of the world. So it’s no surprise it’s also the most natural way people engage with technology. But more than 7,000 languages are spoken around the world, and only a few are well represented online today. That means traditional approaches to training language models on text from the web fail to capture the diversity of how we communicate globally. This has historically been an obstacle in the pursuit of our mission to make the world’s information universally accessible and useful”, said Jeff Dean, Google Senior Fellow, and SVP, Google Research.

As part of its focus on multimodality, Google has developed a Universal Speech Model that is trained in over 400 languages. This makes it the largest language coverage that is seen in a speech model to date. Google will be partnering with communities across the world for sourcing representative speech data.

Bolstering creativity with AI

AI-powered generative models have the potential to help people express themselves using video, imagery, and design in ways they previously could not.

Google is working on developing models that lead the field in terms of quality, generating images that human raters prefer over other models. It had recently shared important breakthroughs, applying its diffusion model to video sequences and generating long coherent videos for a sequence of text prompts. These techniques can be combined to produce video.

Google will also be bringing text-to-image generation technologies to AI Test Kitchen soon. This will enable people to learn about, experience, and give feedback on emerging AI technology.

Along with 2D images, text-to-3D is now a reality with DreamFusion. By this, a three-dimensional model is produced that can be viewed from any angle and can be composited into any 3D environment. There has been significant progress in the audio generation space with AudioLM, which is a model that learns to generate realistic speech and piano music by listening only to audio. After a few seconds of an audio prompt, AudioLM will predict which sounds should follow.

Using AI to address climate change and health challenges

AI has the potential to help people adapt to new challenges caused by climate change. One of these challenges is wildfires, which are increasing in frequency and scale. They affect hundreds of thousands of people today. Google is using satellite imagery to help AI identify and track wildfires in real-time. This helps predict how the fire will evolve and spread. Additionally, Google is using AI to forecast floods. These floods are a result of climate change, which is why Google is using an AI technique called transfer learning to make it work in areas where there’s less data available. AI is also helping provide more access to healthcare in under-resourced regions.

The advancements in neural network architectures, machine learning algorithms, and new hardware approaches for machine learning have helped AI solve important, real-world problems for billions of people. With AI, it has become possible to reimagine how technology can be helpful to improve people’s lives around the world.
