AI is treading further, it won’t be limited to being an assistant through Apple Siri, Microsoft Cortana and Google Assistant. It will soon become a best friend to mobile device users with emotion artificial intelligence.
As per the research firm Gartner, by 2022, the personal devices like mobile phones and wearables, will know more about the emotional state of an individual than his/her own family.
Although we already have the emotion AI technology implemented in virtual personal assistants (VPAs), the step forward will add value to more customer experiences. The emotion AI systems will be able to detect the emotions in verbal and facial expressions of the users.
It will be used in various educational software, video games, autonomous cars, diagnostic software, athletic and health performance, etc.
For example, a video game called ‘Nevermind’ is in development, which uses ‘emotion-based biofeedback’ technology, to adjust the levels and difficulty of game according to mood of the player.
Gartner predicts that there will be an increase in the number of personal devices that will leverage the emotion AI. For instance, a smart fridge is under development which will sense the emotions of user, and will suggest the food to him/her accordingly.
“Prototypes and commercial products already exist and adding emotional context by analyzing data points from facial expressions, voice intonation and behavioral patterns will significantly enhance the user experience,” said Roberta Cozza, research director at Gartner. “Beyond smartphones and connected home devices, wearables and connected vehicles will collect, analyze and process users’ emotional data via computer vision, audio or sensors capturing behavioral data to adapt or respond to a user’s wants and needs.”
Gartner reports that around 10% of wearables users will have changed-lifestyle by 2021 and this can extend their life span by an average of six months.
The smart wearables like medical wristbands can detect many critical conditions such as sleep apnea or cardiac arrhythmia and suggest the treatment. Along with it, some mobile applications are under development for diagnostic and therapy services. These applications will help in detecting the conditions like mental stress, depression and will help the autistic children.
Even a basic wearable device could have a positive impact on the wearer’s health,” said Annette Zimmermann, research vice president at Gartner. “We are seeing growing numbers of users actively changing their behavior for the better with the adoption of a wearable device. Not only can this have beneficial influence on the amount of exercise they do but there is evidence that one or two out of 10 smartwatch and fitness band users discover a condition such as sleep apnea or cardiac arrhythmia through wearing the device.”
Gartner predicts that over 60% of personal technology cloud vendors will use AI cloud services for better functionality and services. The increased usage of VPAs and natural language processing are the reasons behind it.
“We are starting to see adoption of these services from high-profile vendors that are using them to widen their reach,” said Anthony Mullen, research director at Gartner. “Fitbit uses Alexa Skills to make user stats and functionality available through VPA speakers just as Netflix uses Actions for Google Assistant to voice control its service. Ultimately, vendors will compete on the best user experience and the smartness of their products, not the technology behind it.”
The personal device protection methods using passwords are becoming less effective. Even the fingerprint authentication has been around 75% successful due to the dirt and sweat contaminants. The users need better, and more accurate options to unlock their devices.
In next five years, there will be security technologies integrated with machine learning, biometrics and user behavior. It will enable seamless authentication, and enhance the user experience. The advanced security technologies will also recognize the user, and detect the automated threats like malware and malicious bots.
“By the end of 2020, enterprises that invest in new authentication methods and compensating controls will experience 50% fewer identity-related security breaches than peers that do not,” Gartner predicts.
Additionally, there will be in-car systems that will detect the mood of the driver, and adapt the responsiveness of the braking systems accordingly. It will help in avoiding any brutal stop in case the driver is anxious and approaching a busy road.
