Apple has just introduced a groundbreaking personal intelligence system named Apple Intelligence at WWDC 2024, promising to revolutionize the user experience on iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices. This innovative system combines the prowess of generative models with personalized context, offering users intelligence that is not only incredibly useful but also highly relevant to their everyday tasks. Apple Intelligence is deeply integrated into the latest operating systems: iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, leveraging the power of Apple silicon to comprehend and generate language and images, perform actions across various apps, and utilize personal context to streamline and expedite daily activities.
One of the key highlights of Apple Intelligence is its focus on privacy, setting a new standard in the realm of artificial intelligence. With its Private Cloud Compute feature, Apple ensures that user data remains secure by allowing computational processes to seamlessly alternate between on-device processing and larger, server-based models running on dedicated Apple silicon servers.
New Language and Writing Capabilities
Apple Intelligence brings a suite of new features aimed at enhancing user communication and writing. Integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia are brand-new systemwide Writing Tools. These tools empower users to rewrite, proofread, and summarize text across various applications such as Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps.
With the Rewrite feature, users can select from different versions of their written content, adjusting the tone to match the intended audience and purpose. The Proofread function meticulously checks grammar, word choice, and sentence structure while offering suggestions for edits along with explanations, which users can promptly review or accept. The Summarize feature enables users to condense selected text into a digestible paragraph, bulleted key points, a table, or a list.
Apple Intelligence simplifies the email management process with Priority Messages, ensuring that urgent emails are promptly highlighted at the top of the inbox. Additionally, users can now view email summaries without opening each message and effortlessly navigate lengthy threads to locate pertinent details. The Smart Reply feature provides quick response suggestions and identifies questions within emails to ensure comprehensive responses.
Creative Expression with Image Playground
Apple Intelligence also introduces Image Playground, a tool that enables users to create fun and expressive images in seconds. Offering styles like Animation, Illustration, and Sketch, Image Playground integrates seamlessly into apps like Messages and is available as a standalone app for broader experimentation. All image creation is done on-device, ensuring user privacy and unlimited creativity.
Siri’s Evolution with Apple Intelligence
Siri is receiving a significant upgrade with Apple Intelligence, becoming more natural and contextually aware. Enhanced language understanding allows Siri to follow conversations more fluidly and maintain context across interactions. Users can switch between typing and voice commands. Siri’s new design features an elegant glowing light around the screen’s edge when active.
It now offers comprehensive device support and can provide answers to a myriad of user queries about operating iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices. With onscreen awareness, Siri can intelligently interact with user content across a growing number of apps, enriching the overall user experience.
ChatGPT Integration Across Apple Platforms
Apple is integrating access to ChatGPT within its operating systems, allowing users to leverage its expertise and image- and document-understanding capabilities seamlessly. Siri can tap into ChatGPT’s knowledge base when necessary, with users being prompted for consent before any queries or data are sent to ChatGPT. Furthermore, ChatGPT will be integrated into Apple’s systemwide Writing Tools, assisting users in generating content and creating images to complement their written work.
ChatGPT will be available on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia later this year, powered by GPT-4o. Users can access it for free without creating an account, while subscribers will have the option to connect their accounts to access additional features directly from these experiences.
Apple Intelligence Availability
Apple Intelligence will be free for users and available in beta this fall with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia in U.S. English. Additional features, platforms, and languages will be added over the next year. It will be compatible with iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPad and Mac models with M1 or later, with Siri and device language set to U.S. English.
