Alibaba Cloud has joined the Cloud Foundry Foundation as a Gold member, and will deploy Cloud Foundry on its infrastructure.
Cloud Foundry is a leading open-source platform used by large enterprises for developing and deploying cloud applications. It is backed by several tech industry leaders including Dell EMC, Google, IBM, Microsoft, Pivotal and SAP.
Alibaba Cloud, the cloud-unit of Alibaba Group, is a little underestimated cloud provider as compared to AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, even though it’s among the largest clouds in the world. The cloud computing services of Alibaba Cloud include object storage, relational database, elastic computing, artificial intelligence, and big data analysis.
“Being the first open source PaaS offering, Cloud Foundry is designed for multi-cloud, multi-framework and multi-languages,” said Hong Tang, chief architect of Alibaba Cloud. “Alibaba Cloud commits itself to providing more choices for our customers and is, as always, dedicated to the open source community.”
The Chinese cloud computing giant has created a Cloud Provider Interface for Cloud Foundry (BOSH), and will have seamless integration with Cloud Foundry platform. It will have access to Cloud Foundry Application Runtime (CFAR) and Cloud Foundry Container Runtime (CFCR) workloads.
“Alibaba is a dominant force in China, and throughout Asia, the availability of Cloud Foundry now on Alibaba Cloud represents an opportunity to expand the availability of Cloud Foundry,” said Abby Kearns, Executive Director, Cloud Foundry Foundation. “Now China-based enterprises can experience the combined benefits of Cloud Foundry and Alibaba Cloud together.”
With Golden membership, Alibaba Cloud has joined the likes of American Airlines, Ford, Google, Microsoft and Swisscom.
The advantage of Gold membership is that the authority can nominate a candidate for one of the two designated Gold seats on the CF Board of Directors. The Gold members also get the first pick of donuts from the CF break room.
Gold membership is second to Platinum membership for Cloud Foundry. The Platinum member include Cisco, Dell EMC, IBM, SAP, VMware, Pivotal and SUSE.

Customers can access Cloud Foundry on Alibaba Cloud through the Cloud Foundry Foundation Foundry (CFFF). the CFFF is a web-based marketplace for distributions, services, add-on technology, education, etc.
